LIGHT, MATTER AND COLOUR. DAVID MAGÁN AT THE CENTRE DE ARTE CAJA DE BURGOS
Until February 21fst, at the Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos (CAB), the Madrid artist David Magán (Spain, 1979) presents the exhibition Matter Matters. Conceived especially for the CAB space, Magán's expansive sculpture transforms the centre's underground into an immersive experience through form, light and colour.
Self-defined as a sculptor, David Magán thinks of Matter Matters as a project that grew out of sculptural experimentation. As he explains in the interview realized by the CAB, the design of the exhibition emerged from materials: light and methacrylate mainly. The relations these materials allow with light, colour and, of course, form translates into a vast field of sensorial possibilities. From there, the spectator is invited to assume an active role and to circumvent different perspectives that revolve around individual-space-work relationships, experiencing, in the artist's words, "different universes of colour" in which the artwork itself expresses its "physical capacities".
Matter Matters is distributed in two spaces. One dominated by light —where the installation Pavilion 01, the light mural I-B-02 and the video projection VI-B-01 are exhibited—, the other by darkness —where Spectrum 02 and Spectrum 03 are exhibited. Although both spaces function independently it is in their opposition that Magán establishes the meaning of the whole work: the possibilities of matter, colour, geometry and light. Each room demands different frequencies of light where the extension of the chromatic field and its multiple visual possibilities are expanded to the point of transcending the very materiality of objects.
But the oeuvre is not limited to the competence of light in relation to materials. For the creation of the whole project the artist first visited the space provided by the CAB and then reproduced it with 3D tools in his studio. There, one of his obsessions was to design the exhibition according to architectural and human scales. From this premise the colours, understood by the artist according to their weight in space, seek to occupy the rooms in constant dialogue with the architecture and the viewers' route.
In short, Matter Matters is a proposal to the spectator. Using mathematical and geometric patterns, making use of the isometric projections implemented in the installations design and combining the materiality of the elements with the light frequencies, David Magán constructs a space stripped of symbolic interpretations which, from the physical and sensorial (in its purest state) requires the spectator to inhabit and interpret the surroundings corporeally and intuitively.
