MARIA BONTA’S NEW APPOINTMENT AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, WASHINGTON DC
The National Gallery of Art announced Maria Bonta de la Pezuela as new Deputy Director of Development, within the division of External Affairs and Audience Engagement. Maria brings deep expertise in Latin American and Contemporary Art as well as strong professional relationships throughout the Americas to the position.
Maria will work with the senior leadership of the museum to expand and diversify its base of donors and collectors focusing on major gift support, nationally and internationally, and will be a partner in developing strategies for the National Gallery’s next campaign. Through these efforts, she will assist the National Gallery in fulfilling its four strategic priorities to reflect and attract the nation, become the nation’s primary resource for art and creativity, provide a visitor-focused experience, and operate a sustainable and equitable museum.
Bonta’s distinguished career in the international art world includes various leadership and client-facing roles at Sotheby’s auction house, Carpenters Workshop Gallery, and her own strategic advisory firm where she provided consulting services to galleries, museums, and private collectors. She has driven multimillion-dollar revenue and organizational growth for global organizations and is a published expert who has taught at The New School/Parsons School of Design, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, and Mexico City’s CENTRO.
The National Gallery of Art, founded as a gift of Andrew W. Mellon to the nation in 1941, serves as a center of visual art, education, and culture. Its collection of more than 150,000 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, photographs, prints, and drawings spans the history of Western art and showcases some of the triumphs of human creativity. Across 363 days a year, the National Gallery offers a full spectrum of special exhibitions and public programs free of charge. Its board is comprised of five private citizens and four ex-officio senior federal officials who include the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of State, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Secretary of the Smithsonian. In 2019, Kaywin Feldman became the fifth director and the first female director in the National Gallery’s history. Her leadership and management expertise in museums create a new chapter in the National Gallery particularly as it relates to broadening audiences and deepening their experience.
