LAST DAY TO SEE GIANA DE DIER'S WORK AT CASA SANTA ANA

De Dier weaves a visual narrative that seeks to give form and voice to the ephemeral, the lost, and the forgotten. The Panamanian artist, with a sensitivity that blends the personal with the collective, presents an exercise in emotional archaeology through the intervention of photographic archives.

Her work, imbued with nostalgia and romanticism, reinterprets hidden narratives and recovers fragments of identity from displaced communities, exploring the memory of those who once walked these streets and shaped their stories. With a critical gaze, she also questions the power structures that restrict access to these visual records, highlighting absences and proposing new ways of inhabiting them.

De Dier’s work is deeply rooted in the history of Afro-Caribbean migrants in Panama in the early 20th century. Through collage, the artist reconstructs emotional landscapes that engage in dialogue with the viewer, emphasizing resilience and the sense of belonging. Her compositions reveal the fractures in historical documentation and challenge us to question which narratives have been ignored or silenced.

Inspired by the words of Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane, who states that water always finds its way, De Dier translates this idea into a visual cartography where time is not perceived as a line but as a circle, allowing us to observe the past through the lens of the present. In each piece, fragments of memory emerge, transforming loss into a bridge for reflection and reunion, enabling us to recognize a reflection of our own history in the past.

Life, Like Water, Never Forgets Its Path will be open until March 27, 2025, at Casa Santa Ana, located at Avenida Pablo Arosemena and C. 14 Este, El Terraplén, Santa Ana, Panama City, Panama.
