THE DEPTH OF THINGS: NICOLÁS BACAL AT GALERÍA VERMELHO
The Depth of Things is a series of 24 photographs created from a stellar planisphere. For the exhibition at Galeria Vermelho, Nicolás Bacal isolated and separated the galactic plane (the Milky Way) into fragments that he used as precise guides to compose his images.

The artist placed domestic objects on a black table, following the positions of stars and nebulae. For the stars belonging to the constellations of modern science, he placed the objects at a precise height. Bacal used a very shallow depth of field so that only these objects were in focus. In the background, elements such as steel wool, grains of rice, nuts, buttons, etc., lose their definition and are transformed into mysterious galactic shapes.
The work also serves as a domestic homage to the astronomical images captured by the Hubble and Webb telescopes. The mundane becomes stellar, revealing a cosmology of disorder.
