THE POSSIBILITIES OF BUILDING IN THE DRAWINGS OF VELÁSQUEZ
The Ecuadorian gallery +ARTE exhibits 'Homo Ludens' by artist Andrés Velásquez. Combining symbology and architecture, the artist formulates perspectives that propose new axes in terms of seriousness, purpose and custom.
Game is born as a primary instance in which individuals begin to interact with the elements that make up our environment, giving meaning to this condition and establishing parameters in and out of this universe of possibilities, thus creating elements of fiction, uncertainty and outcome.
The series “Homo ludens” by Andrés Velásquez translates to the man who plays. Game places us in a primitive desire for interaction that has been evolving to give rise to a set of strategies within a political system in which the result can be modified by the will of a sovereign.
The exploration of it, through drawing and painting, works with historical elements that occupy an ornamental space as well as art does within intimate places where power is manifested. Specifically, it refers to the iconography of government architecture endowed with decorative components, but which at the same time manifest the monumental hierarchy through sculptures, furniture or, simply, from remote spaces where power tactics are articulated.
Andrés Velásquez was born in Guayaquil in 1990. His father worked with serigraphy and his mother with French art and ceramics. From a very young age he was interested in the arts, and finally finished his studies at the University of the Arts in Guayaquil. His processes take architectural spaces as a starting point, revealing power structures within the landscape. In 2016 he received the Honorable Mention in the October Salon and participated in the residency at the NO LUGAR gallery (Quito) “Chivox open studio”. In 2018 he received the Honorable Mention in the Julio Guayaquil Hall and first place in the Luis Noboa Naranjo Painting Biennial. He lives and works in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
