ARGENTINE QUEER COLLECTIVE AT MASP: ACTIVISM, REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND DIVERSE IDENTITIES

The São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) presents the exhibition Serigrafistas Queer: Liberdade para as sensibilidades (Freedom for sensibilities) from December 13 to March 16, 2025. It addresses themes such as the struggle for reproductive rights, bodily autonomy, the political approach to the HIV crisis, and the celebration of diverse affections and identities.

ARGENTINE QUEER COLLECTIVE AT MASP: ACTIVISM, REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND DIVERSE IDENTITIES

Curated by Amanda Carneiro, MASP's curator, the display includes 56 silkscreens from the museum's collection, as well as new works created specifically for the show. The number of pieces will grow as a result of free workshops for the public, which will be held in the same space starting in January.

This is the first monographic exhibition of the Argentine collective, created in 2007 during a workshop that taught activists how to print t-shirts for the LGBTQIA+ Pride event in Buenos Aires. The group combines graphic techniques with slogans and protest phrases printed on banners, clothes, and fabric pieces. This practice is complemented by performances, community experiences, non-competitive games, and the cultivation of new ecologies of land and relationships.

In Carneiro’s words, “The collective’s serigraphs are created in the context of street activism, protests, and community workshops, making the documentation and preservation of these works an act of resistance in itself. By bringing into MASP practices made by and for the street, the exhibition questions the boundaries between art and activism, public and private space, and the roles of the artist and the viewer”.

The exhibition is divided into seven thematic sections, named after works by the group: Liberdade para as sensibilidades (Freedom for Sensibilities); Acorda Amor! (Wake Up, Love!), dedicated to resistance and self-affirmation; Corpos desobedientes (Disobedient Bodies), which explores the argentine campaign for the Gender Identity Law; O machismo mata! (Machismo Kills!), inspired by the Argentine movement against gender violence Ni Una Menos; Aborto legal é vida (Legal Abortion is Life), which represents the struggle for the legalization of abortion in Argentina and reproductive rights through works created in the context of demonstrations; Ao maestrans com carinho (To Maestrans with Love), which celebrates communities supporting the rights and visibility of trans people; and Identity Under Construction, which presents how identities can be understood as flexible spectrums rather than rigid categories.
