BAphoto PRESENTS LIVETALK #05. COLLECTION DIALOGUES WITH ELLA FONTANALS-CISNEROS AND GABRIEL VALANSI
This Saturday, July 18th, art collector Ella Fontanals-Cisneros will talk with photographer Gabriel Valansi about photography collecting.
Given the expansion of the Covid-19 and the global pandemic situation, BAphoto- the most important Latin American art fair specialized in photography- transforms for the first time its annual fair into a special online edition open to the international community. Thus, BAphoto Live was created, a virtual space dedicated to the promotion, circulation and commercialization of Latin American photographic art. A platform designed according to current circumstances, offering the public a specific selection of works from 40 art galleries from different regions and trajectories.
This Saturday, BAphoto continues with its LiveTalk, a digital platform where conversations are held with important artists, curators, collectors, gallery owners and museum directors from the local and international scene, who, in different occasions, will reflect on various aspects of photography and contemporary art.
Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, art collector and philanthropist with a Cuban origin, began collecting art in the early 1970s with a primary interest in works from Latin America. Over the ensuing years, as the Collection has grown and developed, its scope has broadened. What started as the acquisition of artworks for personal enjoyment has matured into an ambitious life-project. There are, in a sense, several collections within the Collection. Of particular note are four main areas of interest that have been systematically increasing in recent years: Geometric Abstraction from Latin America; Contemporary International and Latin American Art; Contemporary Video; Modern and Contemporary Photography.
Gabriel Valansi lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Visual artist and photographer, Valansi uses various mediums of expression such as the video, installation and photography. He studied Physics and Engineering. He has represented Argentina in several international biennials such as Ushuaia (2001), La Habana (2012 and 2003). He has been awarded with prices and received many accolades such as Artist of the year, by the Argentine Association of Art Critics (2001), Best multimedia exhibition award by the Argentine Association of Art Critics (2005), and The OSDE Foundation Award for Visual Arts (2005). He has been featured in important leading national and internationals publications. His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Argentina, Spain, France, Austria, Germany, Israel, Switzerland, United States, Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay, among others. Today his work is part of important national and international collections such as Museum of Modern Arts of Buenos Aires – MAMBA (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Museum of Contemporary Arts of Rosario – MACRO (Rosario, Buenos Aires), Emilio Caraffa Museum – MEC (Córdoba, Argentina), Museum of Fine Arts – MFAH (Houston, United States), Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris, France), Museum of Modern Art (San Pablo, Brazil), Museum of Modern Art (Río de Janeiro, Brazil) and Casa de las Américas (La Habana) among others.
