Brazilian artist Fernanda Gomes at OPA
Guadalajara, Mexico
The Brazilian artist Fernanda Gomes will present at OPA an exhibition conceived specifically for this occasion. The artist will use rudimentary recycled materials which have their origin in nature or in the city. Pieces of paper, wood fragments, stones, and forgotten tools can be found operating within the space of the exhibition. Thus, the artist creates unusual physical and semantic connections between the diverse materials. In her work, Fernanda Gomes plays with the entropic function of the objects, showing the erosion and the wear caused by time, in the strictly physical level as well as in the realm of memory and history.
Fernanda Gomes was born in 1960 in Río de Janeiro, Brazil, where she lives and works. Particularly noteworthy among her solo shows are the ones presented at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal (2006), Baumgartner Gallery, New York, USA (2006), Luisa Strina Gallery, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2005), in Project Room, Art Miami, USA (2001); Matadero Madrid, Madrid, Spain (2008), 401 Contemporary, Berlin, Germany (2009) and at the Sao Paulo Cultural Center the current year. She has also participated in numerous group shows around the world, among them the ones featured at MARCO, Museum of Contemporary Art, Vigo, Spain (2005), Museu de Arte Moderna do Brazil, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2006), Museo de Arte Del Banco de la República de Bogotá, Colombia (2008), Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, USA (2009), Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne, Australia (2010) and in Fundación / Colección Jumex in Mexico City, Mexico (2010), among others.
