CELEBRATING PHOTOGRAPHY AT PINTA BAphoto 2023
The 19th edition of Pinta BAphoto opened at La Rural, Buenos Aires, Argentina with emerging and established artists, unique curatorial proposals and more than 40 exhibiting galleries from Argentina and the world. Tickets for Friday, September 29, Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1 are available at Ticketek.
The artistic encounter, dedicated to the promotion, diffusion and commercialization of photographs, is supported by EFG Wealth Management as the main sponsor of the fair.
As every year, Pinta BAphoto exhibits in its Main Section galleries and artists from different parts of the continent, with a special focus on Argentine galleries. It features the proposals of Foto Estudio Luisita, represented by HACHE gallery; or Oscar Bony with Smart Gallery, among other proposals.
In addition, there is the Fuera de Foco section, curated by Bárbara Golubicki, a sector devoted to the exploration of the different procedures, languages and types of elements made possible by the photographic medium.
In this edition, BAphoto presented Boleslaw Senderowicz as a Tribute Artist, curated by Francisco Medail. Senderowicz worked as a fashion photographer for Claudia magazine, a publication of Editorial Abril oriented to the modern middle-class woman. At the same time, he collaborated with different advertising agencies, making photographic campaigns for Argentine and international brands. To his professional work Senderowicz added an emphatic participation in the artistic field.
The Video Project section, curated by Irene Gelfman, is devoted exclusively to the moving image. In its seventh edition, the common thread is the relationship of bodies with the environment and the notion that in every act of looking there is an expectation of meaning, where the important thing is not seeing, but the way we process and relate things.
The selected projects expand the physical and conceptual materiality of video and invite the viewer to relate and interact with the works on view. As a result of the coexistence of these images, the idea emerges that no statement can be made without the presence of a voice, of a surface, without becoming a body in a sensitive element and without leaving a trace in space or memory.
In the Auditorium 2023, coordinated by Verónica Santalla, a series of talks, interviews and book presentations by artists will be presented, bringing together important figures of Latin American photography. These meetings will take a journey between the history and the future of photography. Experts and artists will talk about artificial intelligence, collecting and the visual memory of our country. A tribute to Boleslaw Senderowicz will also be presented and books by various photographers will be shared with the public.
The fair will also feature a series of guided tours entitled "Diversity in Focus", led by curator Vanesa Catellani, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires. The cycle seeks to bring to the general public those proposals that contemplate diversity in productive processes and techniques, with different visual results. In order to create bridges between visitors and the works, the curator will make an explanatory tour through a colloquial and accessible language, without losing sight of the need to encourage the creation of new audiences for contemporary art.
At the same time, historian Rosario Villani proposes a tour of the fair based on three themes: "structures and destructures" from a generalized concept taking into account different images, the relationship between "the body as an object and the moment of the photographic shot" regardless of its context, and "political and social commitment" over the years.
