Dialogue Among Art and Pedagogy in Two Parallel Exhibitions at the MUAC: Beuys and Mario Rangel Faz

The University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) in association with Deutsche Bank presents an exhibition on teachers and their students, using Joseph Beuys and several of his most prominent students as a starting point to explore the relationship of the artists as a teacher and mentor. At the same time, the exhibition Coordenadas, an homage to the Mexican artist and teacher Mario Rangel Faz, enlightens his decisive influence.

Ergo, Materia. Arte povera. MUAC 2010

Based on the quote “Being a teacher is my greatest work of art”, by Joseph Beuys, the exposition, curated by Friedhelm Hütte, global chief of Art, Liz Christensen y Christina März, from this renown collection, is the third one that makes an itinerancy for seven countries of Latin America. It celebrates artistic individualism mixed with collective work, the relationship among art and pedagogy, and creates a bridge with the rich diversity of ideas present in the practice of contemporary art in Latin America. This exposition contains approximately 50 important works in paper by Joseph Beuys and his most famous students of the Akademie de Dusseldorf: Lothar Baumgarten, Jörg Immendorff, Blinky Palermo, Imi Knoebel, and Katharina Sieverding.

In each country where the exhibition Beuys y más allá... is shown, it will be presented with a paralleled exhibition from other renown artist-master and his disciples, who are selected from the curatorial team of the hosted museum. Parallel to Beuys and beyond-To Teach as an Art, the MUAC will exhibit Coordinates, Mario Rangel Faz, an exposition in homage to Mario Rangel Faz (México, D.F. 1956-2009), painter and printer, whose perfection and mastery of the process of printing placed him among the most important printers of his generation, is also being exhibited.

Curated by Vicente Rojo Cama and Mariana Elizondo, the exhibition will include a group of important works and will also integrate his intense experience as a founding member of two collective iniciatives: "Grupo SUMA" and the collective "Atte. La Dirección", which handled similar objects and establishments that were proyected into the public sphere, integrating the experimenting of art education models for people who are not necessarily associated with art, while also wielding dynamics in function of a pedagogical pulse [A1] for their professional formation. the exposition includes paintings, drawings, collages, graphics, installations, art-object pieces and documental videos. These two expositions ( Beuys and beyond... and Coordinates...) emphasize how experience models are a decisive part of free and experimental education.

Beuys and beyond – Teaching as an art, and Coordinated, Mario Rangel Faz, form part of a curatorial cycle Facts and Delusions: Support, Material, and Work , who serves to take back the platonic figure of the artists and the poet as an alchemist who shows the way in which materials, in art, are the way the artists turns his work into pure illusion.

After MUAC, both exhibitions will be shown at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (Marco). Later on Beuys y más allá... will travel to the Library Luis Ángel Arango, from Bogotá, Colombia; The institute Tomie Ohtake, in Sao Paulo, Brasil, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima, Perú, among other museums.
