EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO CELEBRATED ITS 50th ANNIVERSARY

In a ceremony in which artists, curators, public officials and members of El Museo del Barrio participated, the museum located in the heart of New York celebrated its 50th anniversary. More than a mere anniversary, the museum's half century is a victory symbol for Latin American production within the international art scene.

In the framework of the annual gala that El Museo carries out in order to raise funds for its permanent collection and the development of programs, this year's gala had a more festive face. Artists, collectors and galleries donated artworks to auction and collaborate with the growth of this institution committed to the power of transformation of art. Among the collaborators are Firelei Baez, Sandu Darie, Gonzalo Fonseca, Marcius Galan, Jose Carlos Martinat, Jesus 'Bubu' Negron, Alejandro Villar Rojas and Vivian Suter.

In addition, there were recognitions to different outstanding figures within the artistic scene: the collector Ella Fontanals-Cisneros; the artist and founding member of El Museo, Raphael Montañez Ortíz; and businessman and collector Craig Robinson. Another important presence was Bill Di Blasio, mayor of New York, who designated May 2nd as "El Museo del Barrio Day."

As reported from the museum, more than $ 1.2 million were collected. An important economic stimulus destined to the future exhibitions, the expansion of the permanent collection of El Museo and the development of educational and innovative programs within the community.
