Faena Art Center presents 'En el Umbral' by Roger Hirons, winner of the 2016 Faena Prize
Faena Art Center announces the opening of the exhibition En el Umbral by Roger Hiorns, winner of the Faena Prize for the Arts 2016. The artist was awarded $ 75,000 dollars for the creation of a new project in Faena Art Center Buenos Aires and on the premises of the Oceana Puerto Madero residential project on dike 2, in front of Faena Hotel Buenos Aires.
The Faena Award for the Arts is a biennial prize awarded by an international jury that recognizes artistic experimentation, encourages postdisciplinary exploration and encourages research into the infinite links between art, technology and design. Hiorns' proposal is related to the concepts of time and duration through architecture, and was selected by an international jury that included Carlos Basualdo, Keith L. & Katherine Sachs chief curator of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Achim Borchardt- Hume, Exhibition Director of Tate Modern; Caroline Bourgeois, curator of the Pinault Collection; the independent curator Jesús Fuenmayor and Victoria Noorthoorn, Director of the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires. The exhibition On the Threshold opens to the public from May 19.
In the Threshold it appropriates an extension of open land, taking over a kind of futuristic landscape for the excavation of elements of our history together with our current cultural climate. This exhibition reimagines the artist's existing works and resignifies the objects of the urban landscape and the historical context of the city of Buenos Aires; fusing sculpture, mundane objects and performances as means to address the potential for human creation; and questioning our own temporality or what we as a society offer for the future. Each of these elements is activated by the interpretation of a performer, a young man, who prints a sense of monumentality and decadence, of innocence and darkness of past and future.
Alan Faena commented "We always seek to support the most innovative and contemporary artistic creation, and we help promote the work of artists before an international audience." With the Faena Prize, we support artists in the realization of their dreams, and we are proud to present the project of Roger and the way he appropriates our history as a city, country, and within the unique spaces of the Faena Art Center, the Sala Molinos and the adjacent property. "
Pablo León de la Barra highlighted the exhibition "Hiorns proposes a temporary and performative installation that is both incredibly architectural and visual, crossing disciplines and temporalities, never completely finalized, a proposal that is very much in keeping with the mission of Faena. Ultimately, the process is itself work: an alchemical reaction to the urban landscape and the historical narratives maintained there. "
