Four New Exhibitions At The Museum Of Latin American Art (Molaa)
The Museum of Latin American Art, MoLAA, announces the opening of four new exhibitions that will take place in the first quarter of 2013.
“Intersections”
“Intersections" presents a selection of works of art from MoLAA’s Collection that connect to one another and generate dialogs between the past and the present in Latin American art. The exhibition is structured around an exercise in inter-connectivity that ties together two works of art by two Modern masters: Joaquín Torres-García and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Following the concept of the Inverted Map by Joaquín Torres- García, in which the artist depicted the map of the Americas upside down, Intersections moves from the South, with works of art by Joaquín Torres-García and the School of the South, to the North, Mexico, with the muralists and the Mexican School. In between, the exhibition examines kinetic works of art, new ways of approaching abstraction today, the usage of written language in art and notions of nationality and identity. Some of the artists in the exhibition are: David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Joaquín Torres-García, Francisco Zúñiga, Jean Charlot, Leopoldo Méndez, Pablo O’Higgins, Oswaldo Guayasamín, Eduardo Kingman, Carlos Cruz Diez, Alejandro Otero, Leo Matiz, Felipe Ehrenberg, José Bedia, Álvaro Barrios, Alexandre Arrechea, Jorge Macchi, Carlos Motta, Gabriel de la Mora and Milagros de la Torre.
“Mixtape”
Mixtape, an exhibition comprised primarily of works on paper from MoLAA’s Collection, focuses on the tradition of drawing in modern and contemporary Latin American art. The title refers to the creation of a conceptual mix or compilation of songs connected by a theme. In this selection, the link between the artworks is not only their medium but also their relationships as studies on line, the figure and architecture, all intrinsic elements of drawing. Another component of the exhibition is the selection of songs to play as soundtracks accompanying the works. These soundtracks, selected by the curator, the staff and the public, will be presented in listening stations and cell phone audio tours and will also be incorporated into exhibition related educational activities.
The video Partizione linéaire #2, 2007, by Fabiana Cruz (Venezuela, b. 1984), serves as the preface of the exhibition. In the video, the artist wears headphones and responds to the music she is listening to (Vivaldi’s Agitata da due venti) by creating line drawings on the sidewalk. Similarly, the spectator is invited to listen to the songs selected and participate by suggesting other songs inspired by their experience while viewing the artwork.
“The Voyeur: Nudes and Erotic Art from Molaa’s Collection”
“The Voyeur” presents a selection of nudes and erotic art from MoLAA’s Collection. The selection includes painting, works on paper, video and photography, addressing themes of sexual desire in subtle, ironic or explicit ways. This small exhibition, meant for mature audiences, is presented in a restricted section of the galleries.
“Marta Chilindron: Integral Geometries”
For the past 16 years, the artist Marta Chilindrón (Argentina, b. 1951) has worked primarily with furniture forms. She is interested in the volumetric relationships between the components of each of her works, as well as in the relationship between perspective and sculpture. The artist began experimenting with these modular forms at the end of the 1970s, producing unfolding sculptures of simplified furniture forms that collapse in space.
Marta Chilindrón has participated in a number of exhibitions including Lodz Biennale, Lodz, Poland, 2010; “The Sites of Latin American Abstraction”, traveling exhibition: CIFO 2006, MoLAA 2009; “Sculpture in 4 Dimensions”, Amelie A. Wallace Gallery at SUNY, New York, 2006; and “Sculptures”, dot galerie, Geneva, Switzerland, 2001. Chilindrón lives and works in New York.
