Lectures and Courses in the Alternative Space of Soma, Mexico
retaking pioneering experiences driven by artist like La Panadería, and Temistocles 44, invited Carlos Amorales the past January 19 to talk about his most recent exhibitions inside the project of creating “a unique platform in the cultural ambient”.
The artist that collaborate in this initiative without intention of profit, that include a system of residencies for national and international artists, a program for the professionalization of artist and a forum for conferences, discussions, and weekly events, are: Eduardo Abaroa, Francis Alÿs, Artemio, Julieta Aranda, Teresa Margolles, Laureana Toledo, Artemio, Eduardo Abaroa, Eduardo Thomas, Joaquín Segura, Juan Carlos Reyna, María Alós y Yoshúa Okón.
Parallel to this, since January 8 No importa cuando empiece, será el mejor momento, is shown in SOMA, an independent project of four artists from New Zealand and Australia: Fiona Connor, Louise Menzies, Sanne Mestrom y Kate Newby, that passed a month in the City of Mexico working together. The result of this coexistence was the exhibition designed “to generate common interest and conversations inside the job of these artists, and the possible connections with specific artistic traditions of the Federal District”.
SOMA also offers a series of courses aimed at artist that have already finished or are close to finishing their degree in the visual arts. Artist whos proffesional trajectory is considered equally can also participate. Those interested should count with a portfolio of pieces. Students with similar diciplines like film and video, design, or critic theory can also participate. The courses offered are: “Incomplete history of documental film”, distributed by John Menick; Corresponding exercise”, according to the curator Taiyana Pimentel, “Farce, vandalisim, and the limits of art.” Dictaded by the artist María Alós, and “12 lectures of the aesthetic pragmatism”, of Eduardo Abaroa
