Los Carpinteros
at Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma
Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma presents a selection of important works of Cuban artists' collective Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters) from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TB A21) Collection, founded by Francesca von Habsburg, daughter of Baron HH Thyssen-Bornemisza. Los Carpinteros. Handwork-Constructing the World. Art works from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Contemporary Art, curated by Daniela Zyman is the first solo exhibition by Los Carpinteros in a Spanish museum and sponsored by Fundación Banco Santander.
Es Baluard exhibition revolves around four large sculptures and installations: Cama (Bed) (2007), a bed intertwined with the form of a possible highway, which evokes the psychological realm of dreams and the dreams themselves. Porta-aviones (Aircraft Carrier) (2005) is a miniature swimming pool, which takes the form of an aircraft carrier, complicating the expectations of functionality and utility, leisure and war. Frío estudio del desastre (Cold disaster study) (2005) is an accurate reconstruction of the time of the explosion of a wall penetrated by a missile, which generates a strange scene in the eyes of the beholder. Espejos de Agua (Water Mirrors) (2001) is a set of old drafting tables covered with water, so that it reflects the electricity of a group of desk lamps, creating a scenario in which the role and matter dissolved in liquefaction and ephemeral reflections. In addition, a series of large watercolours show the complex relationship between drawings and object design and sculpture, in the work of Los Carpinteros, characterized by a wide range of topics and conceptual manipulations.
Es Baluard publishes specific information about the exhibits. This is complemented by a monograph published by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Collection, which provides a comprehensive overview of the artistic practices of Los Carpinteros from 2003-2010. In addition, you can buy a special edition of this monograph, designed by Los Carpinteros, which includes a flip-flop.
The founder and president of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Francesca von Habsburg, has followed Los Carpinteros’ career by collecting their work for years and considers these artists creations, as an important part of her contemporary art collection at a time an essential contribution of contemporary art in the world. "I met the artists in Havana, Cuba, in 2001 and found that his work was completely original, I loved their point of view on our society, their values, complemented with a particular sense of humour. I have followed their career for many years and am delighted to see it display in Spain, where they have recently installed. There is much interest in their work, particularly by Elena Ochoa Foster and her new gallery Ivorypress. It is indeed an honour and a pleasure working with her in this project! Los Carpinteros are now renowned international artists and we have included their work in all international exhibitions of the foundation TB A21” she says.
Los Carpinteros (Dagoberto Rodriguez, Marco Castillo) internationally recognized for their watercolours, sculptures and installations. The artists are inspiring by the real world, especially in architectural and urban structures, designs and wooden objects, tools and construction materials in order to create works that express a syntax based on the contradictions between object and function, art and day-to-day practicality and uselessness. Despite the pseudonym Los Carpinteros, the most prolific in the history of this group are large watercolours: careful studies of transformed objects, molten, explosive walls, all seized in moments that seem eternal. These watercolours are in many cases, preliminary sculptures and installations.
