MUSUK NOLTE IN OPEN FILE #17 - BAphoto LIVE
BAphoto Live presents Open File, an interviews program coordinated by Marina Oybin in which artists are invited to revisit the history of their images based on an anecdote or memory linked to their personal archive. In this case, the guest photographer is Musuk Nolte and the talk focuses on his series La Resistencia del Silencio (2012-2019) (The Resistance of Silence)
The Resistance of Silence introduces tension between two of the extremes of the photographic representation of political rhetoric. In the foreground, photographs taken during various protests in Lima between 2012 and 2019, the last being recorded on the day of the dissolution of the Congress of the Republic of Peru. In contrast, a set of official images, extracted from the broadcast system of the Congress itself, in the frame of the "minute of silence". This in reference to the moment of the shoot, in which the congressmen hold a minute of silence in commemoration of the death of an individual or group.
"From the theatricalization of politics - postulates Arnau Roselló - to the power of representation of the mask (people), power relations are literally traversed by the image." Both the images of the protest and of the congress’ hemicycle occupy a shared space. Its friction aims to highlight the symbolic weaknesses of actors and performances in the exercise of politics and, in turn, the cyclical and symbiotic of this ecosystem.

Musuk Nolte, born in 1988 in Mexico and nationalized in Peru, works both in the documentary and artistic areas to represent socio-cultural issues in dialogue with the study of the human condition. With degree in Professional Photography and a Master in Contemporary Photography from the Centro de la Imagen in Peru, his works present an Amazonian and Andean cosmovision. Nolte has exhibited in Peru, Singapore, Korea, France, Spain, Italy, the United States, Chile and Argentina, among others. He is currently a National Geographic Explorer and a Pulitzer Center grantee.
Marina Oybin is a journalist specialized in art. She writes in Radar (Página/12), La Nación, Le Monde Diplomatique and in the culture supplement of Perfil. Graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and also from the Prilidiano Pueyrredón National School of Fine Arts, she completed postgraduate studies in Public Opinion and Media at Flacso and at the University of Bologna. She worked both in Argentina and abroad. And, among others, she interviewed Marina Abramovic, Orlan, Anish Kapoor, Christian Boltanski, Jeremy Deller, Sophie Calle, Tomás Sarraceno and León Ferrari.
