Marta Minujin: MINUCODEs in Americas Society
Marta Minujín: MINUCODEs revisits an earlier project by Argentinian artist Marta Minujín, held in 1968 at the Americas Society, then known as the Center for Inter-American Relations (CIAR). For the project, called Minucode, Minujín collected social data through a series of cocktail parties that were attended by people who responded to a series of questionnaires the artist posted in the press. Drawing on methods used in happenings and cinema verité, Minujín staged an immersive electronic environment in the CIAR gallery using footage from the cocktail parties, installing a series of light and sound shows created by selected party guests in an adjacent room. These shows were conceived in collaboration with Tony Martin.
Through original footage recently recovered and archival documents, Marta Minujín: MINUCODEs, curated by Gabriela Rangel y José Luis Blondet, and on exhibit from March 2 to April 3, 2010, illuminates the early work of a fundamental voice of the neo-avant-garde scene in Latin America. Additional documentation on Circuit (1967) and Simultaneidad en Simultaneidad (1966) – a collaboration with Allan Kaprow and Wolf Vostel, will also be on view.
Among the public programs in conjunction with the exhibition Americas Society will present a tour gallery with the artist and the curators on March 2. Judi Rodenbeck and José Luis Blondet will offer a lecture on March 30 and there will be a panel discussion with Alexander Alberro, Carolee Schneemann and Jenni Sorkin, moderated by Gabriela Rangel on April 13.
