PALMA DE MALLORCA - THREE NEW EXHIBITIONS AT THE BALUARD MUSEU D’ART CONTEMPORANI
The Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma presents its new programme of exhibitions and public programs based on the three individual exhibitions of Ana Vieira, Martha Rosler and Marina Planas, with which it relates to contemporary emergencies such as feminism, the environment, mass tourism and the exploitation of images.
«Ana Vieira. El hogar y la huida» (The home and the flight) is the first international solo exhibition of the Portuguese artist (Coimbra, 1940 - Lisbon, 2016) outside her native country. Through a set of works of diverse formats, such as photography, installation or video, a dialogue is established with the domestic space and the social fabric with a reflection on how architecture reveals itself as a structure that points at issues that range from the situation of women in the home to the weakening of the social fabric following the financial crisis of 2007-2008
The exhibition «Martha Rosler ¿Como llegamos allí desde aquí?» (How do we get there from here?) presents a set of works in video format and photographs of the artist where the need to become aware of our present is stressed from the sum of events that build the past. The political commitment and feminist perspective of the pioneer artist in the use of video as a tool for social analysis give rise to a series of demands that remain a first-order requirement in our contemporary world.
Rosler (New York) has been present in many of the conflicts towards which her works point, which has allowed her to observe from proximity different realities from Havana to New York, passing through Mexico City and Barcelona. The program of parallel activities deepens its political gaze with a conversation between Martha Rosler and the artist, activist and politician Marcelo Expósito on April 2.
Finally, «Marina Planas. Enfoques bélicos del turismo: todo incluido» (War approaches to tourism: all inclusive) is a project that asks us about the use or abuse of territories that become a tourist destination, based on a work with archive images of diverse nature. In this show, framed under a typical and topical image of the landscape understood from commercial exoticism, the visitor can find a mosaic of images accompanied by texts related to tourism and war.
In this way, Es Baluard Museu, in collaboration with El Corte Inglés, opens a new line of action focused on the production of projects by local mid-career artists: Marina Planas Antich (Palma, 1983) is a visual artist, researcher and cultural producer. Her family was involved in the production of postcards during the decades of the 50s, 60s and 70s for the tourism industry, thus generating iconography and holiday images of the Balearic Islands.
The exhibitions «Ana Vieira. Home and flight »,« Martha Rosler How do we get there from here? » and «Marina Planas. War approaches to tourism: all inclusive ”, curated by Imma Prieto, can be visited from February 21 to May 10, 2020. The museum also opens its new corporate image and restructuring its exhibition spaces with three rooms for temporary exhibitions.
