Patricia Villalobos at the CAVC/MUA, Tegucigalpa, Honduras
The Centro de Artes Visuales Contemporáneo CAVC/MUA in Tegucigalpa, Honduras presents “memeplex@ N14°06'17" W87°11'59 " by Patricia Villalobos Echeverría, a site-specific installation in Sala MAC with multiple sculptural elements that invade the walls referencing collision, transformation, contamination and subversion. The persistent, intrusive sculptural forms unfold from the corner as they resonate with ideas of mimesis, matrix and cross-pollination.
According to the artist "... the work consists of several areas of impact, which are scattered over the walls, invading them as a viral system that has taken over the space as a viral system. The work makes reference to a meme, which is the unit, according to cultural communication theories, that carries cultural ideas and spreads them through culture from one individual to another or from one entity to another or from one generation to the next. The work alludes to systems, situations or elements, which may gradually and imperceptibly transform an entire entity, whether these are at a cellular level or in social, cultural, political or economic terms. The installation evokes a perpetual state of transition, malleability and movement that reflects on our contemporary condition in relation to individuals, subcultures or global conflicts. The work speaks about the possibility and urgency of change, about social, cultural and political shifts, and about personal transformations and queer identities.”
memeplex@ N14°06'17" W87°11'59" follows a series of site-specific installations that the artist has been producing for the past few years, in which sculptural forms invade architectural spaces. Such installations have been produced for the XI Havana Biennial (2012); MARTE, Museo de Arte de El Salvador (San Salvador, 2011); VII Central American Biennial (Managua, 2010); I Caribbean Triennial (Santo Domingo, 2010); and the Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, 2009), among others.
The Centro de Artes Visuales Contemporáneo CAVC/MUA is a space dedicated to the exhibition, promotion and production of contemporary Central American visual art.
