THE CITY OF CORAL GABLES IS TURNING ON THE LIGHTS
Illuminate Coral Gables(ICG) is a new public art initiative focusing on the intentional use of light and technology to transform public art by day into magical and mysterious work at night.
The ICG’s exhibition will turn the streets, historic buildings, and public spaces of Coral Gables into a brilliant outdoor museum. With downtown Coral Gables, FL as a three-dimensional canvas, this first-of-its-kind exhibition will fill the city with newly commissioned and existing works by world-renowned local, national & international artists and emerging virtuosos.
Unveiling on February 12, 2021, ICG will bring stunning interactive art, video projections, and light sculptures to the streets. This free experience will be on view through March 14th from 6 – 10 pm.
Illuminate Coral Gables is Florida’s first free annual art and light exhibition. Curated by Lance Fung, Catherine Cathers, Jennifer Easton and Rosie Gordon Wallace, the exhibition will feature eight projects incorporating video projections, sculpture and art installations by a group of local, national, and international artists including Kiki Smith, Cai Guo-Qiang, Sandra Ramos, Carlos Estevez, David Gumbs, Joseph Clayton Mills and students from FIU. (Visit: www.illuminatecoralgables.org for artist bios.)
The show has an educational component, through a partnership with Florida International University’s Art and Art History Department, that will include a projection mapped video and sound-based work by professor Jonathan Perez with six undergraduate and graduate students.
