The Brazillian Collective Chelpa Ferro at the Aldrich Museum

The Aldrich presents an interdisciplinary performance by Chelpa Ferro, a Brazilian collective comprised of renowned visual artists Barrão, Luiz Zerbini, and Sergio Mekler. For these artists, any object can simultaneously be an instrument and an artwork. They are known for impressive live presentations that reflect the improvisational and creative nature of Brazilian contemporary culture, blurring the boundaries between high art (professional musicians) and low art (Brazilian popular music and everyday sounds). In performance they use everyday consumer items that have been transformed into sound-creating devices, producing an exchange between the visual, sculptural, and acoustic qualities of the objects.

The Aldrich is one of the few non-collecting contemporary art museums in the United States. Founded on Ridgefield’s historic Main Street in 1964, the Museum enjoys the curatorial independence of an alternative space while maintaining art-handling standards of a national institution. Exhibitions feature work by emerging and mid-career artists, and education programs help adults and children to connect to today’s world through contemporary art.
