_Surrealists Before Surrealism_ at the Juan March Foundation, Madrid

The exhibition includes nearly 200 drawings, prints, photographs, books and magazines. The exhibition, curated by Yasmin Doosry and organized in collaboration with the Germanisches Nationalmuseum of Nuremberg, contains works from the late medieval period through to Surrealism.

The exhibition will include works by artists such as Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer Erhard Schön, Matthias Zündt, Wenzel Jamnitzer, Hendrick Goltzius, Jacques Callot, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Francisco de Goya, Max Klinger, Alfred Kubin, Paul Klee, Hannah Höch, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Herbert Bayer, Hans Bellmer, André Masson, Brassaï and Maurice Tabard.

The show follows the path set out by the legendary exhibition Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism, organized 75 years ago by the Museum of Modern Art's founding Director Alfred H. Barr, in which Barr provided a genealogy of Surrealism by juxtaposing, for the first time, the work of contemporary artists with that of Hieronymus Bosch, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, William Hogarth, Francisco de Goya and Grandville among others.

Undoubtedly, the artistic sensibility of the Surrealist artists, as well as their preferred working methods, led them to fix their collective gaze upon the long tradition of the art of subjectivity, from the late medieval era, to the Mannerist and Baroque periods, through to modernity.

The exhibition and the catalogue - which will be published in Spanish, English and German - are divided into 11 categories: 1. The Inner Eye.- 2. Magical Spaces.- 3. Changing Perspectives.- 4. Composite Figures.- 5. The Constructed Human Being.- 6. The (Dis)order of Things.- 7. Capriccio.- 8. The Metamorphoses of Nature.- 9. Phantasmagorias .- 10. Shadows of Shadows.- 11.
