David Maggioni

Ruth Benzacar, Buenos Aires

The sculpture in white tissue paper by David Maggioni from Santa Fe (Argentina, 1988), which inundates the new space of Ruth Benzacar Gallery, resembles a great and soft, peaceful white cloud.

David Maggioni

Maggioni completed the appearance of the unexpected expanded object by bathing it in diffuse light and silencing the fans that maintain it inflated. The breathing of that light mass which, however, has an almost imperceptible movement, is not heard. The visitor is invited to walk around what looks like a shapeless globe that covers the floor and grows in all directions without asking for permission. After the first steps, the poetic force of the sculpture leads the viewer to become abstracted from his/her own circumstance and imagine a flight on that great cloud, which although it seems to go too far, is not felt as threatening but rather as a promise of festive serenity.
Maggioni inaugurated his solo show at Ruth Benzacar because in 2010 he had won the competition “Currículum cero”, a contest directed at very novel artists with scarce artistic background and no prizes. Organized by the gallery, during its first 10 years it was awarded to young artists who now have international careers, like Flavia Da Rin, Eduardo Basualdo, Luciana Lamothe, and others.
