ABSTRACTION, COLOR AND DISPLAY AT GALERÍA DEL PASEO

Curatorial text by Max Hernández Calvo.

The series “Screens” is a pictorial rethinking of the guidelines of Latin American geometric abstraction, formulated from the perspective of a screen, taking as a reference those devices that emit their own light, such as TVs, computers or cell phones. In his exploration with intense light and chromatic contrasts, the artist resorts for this series of works to a palette of RGB colors (red, green, blue), typical of the color light used in the screens, to which he adds black and white. His linear compositions present strips of flat colors that trace, concentrically, the same perimeter of the formats he uses. Thus, the compositions highlight the geometry of the contour that contains them, which is none other than an offset rectangle.

A series of brick sculptures continue his exploration, building bridges between the digital world and the material world and between the modern Westernized present and the pre-modern and pre-Columbian past. These pieces echo the adobes of the huacas (such as those of the Huaca Pucllana itself, in front of the gallery), but in them the “glitch” results in a fusion of volumes that are reiterated and superimposed, rather than a mismatch.

Guillermo García Cruz (Montevideo, 1988). Professor of Visual Arts at the IPA, Montevideo, Uruguay. He has been part of the Washington Studio School and Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, Washington, USA. In Uruguay, his work has been exhibited individually at the Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo in Montevideo, and internationally in exhibitions in Lima, Buenos Aires, Mexico, Miami, Washington DC, New York, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Timisoara and Tianjin. Among other articles and mentions, in 2019 he has been highlighted globally among the 12 artists in the focus of the next generation, by the Ibero-American site Arte Informado. He currently lives and works between the United States and Latin America, developing an interdisciplinary body of work that consists of painting, photography, sculpture, action and installation, exploring a contemporary approach to the geometric question and the different conceptual interpretations that stem from its formal disruption. Recently, his work became part of the collections CIFO - Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, USA; Jorge Pérez Collection, USA; Collection of Chicago Northwestern University, USA; DC Collection, Bogota, Colombia; Luis Bassat Collection, Barcelona; Alberto and Ginette Rebaza Collection, Lima; MACA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry), Uruguay; among other international private collections.
