THE DUTY OF THE FORMS IN THE WORKS OF PAUL AMUNDARAI

From 05/21/2022 to 06/30/2022
Cerquone Gallery
Caracas, Venezuela

From May 21, Cerquone Gallery Caracas presents the exhibition "Pintur(A)política" (Apolitical painting) by Paul Amundarain. The exhibition, curated by Félix Suazo, "displays a repertoire of forms that evoke modern tradition and bring to the forefront the relationship between art and its context."

THE DUTY OF THE FORMS IN THE WORKS OF PAUL AMUNDARAI

Among the selected works are small and large format paintings in acrylic on canvas, works from the Barriers series in serigraphy and stainless steel, works on paper and velvet, lenticular prints and iron sculptures from the Multiple Realities series, a set that stands out for its technical audacity and refined elaboration.

Unlike the explicit character of his previous work, saturated with allusions to a contrasting reality, in this exhibition there is an ironic delight in pure forms, under which lies the ancient conflict between "artistic commitment" and "art for art's sake". An unfinished debate resurfaces here, whose origin dates back decades, but which regains validity in the current moment in which the country is living. Between visual neatness and technical syncretism, these works remind us that everything in art has a meaning, even what is omitted or remains undefined. This ambivalent condition defines a pendular relationship between art and history, with moments of programmatic adherence and periods of deliberate abstinence.

Behind the sinuous appearance of these works, there is a latent memory that drags the modern unconscious, even after the drastic ideological and historical mutations suffered by the nation.

Paul Amundarain (Caracas, 1985) studied architecture at the Central University of Venezuela. He carries out his work in his studios in Caracas, Miami and Mexico. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows in galleries, museums, and art fairs in Caracas, Maracaibo, Madrid, and Miami. Several of his works are part of renowned art collections or have been incorporated into architectural spaces.

Since its foundation in 2016, Cerquone Gallery has intensified its activity and multiplied its reach from its headquarters in Caracas and Madrid. It has also deepened its purpose of linking emerging art with the global art circuit, with a focus on South America and Europe, projecting itself at important international fairs such as Pinta (2018, 2019, 2020), Art Lima (2019), Estampa (2020, 2021), Volta Basel (2019, 2021) and Zona Maco (2022).
