VIK MUNIZ: PHOTOGRAPHY AND STRUCTURE IN ELBA BENÍTEZ

From 09/16/2024 to 11/09/2024
Madrid, Spain

Madrid's Elba Benitez gallery has entrusted Vik Muniz (Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1961) with its first exhibition of the new season. Entitled Photocubism, the proposal is based on art historiography itself, recovering the cubist aesthetics as a substratum of the technical intervention he makes on iconic works of this movement. The Brazilian artist thus opts for this language to obtain new images that raise questions about perception and result.

VIK MUNIZ: PHOTOGRAPHY AND STRUCTURE IN ELBA BENÍTEZ

The works collected in Photocubism are part of a series that gives new life to emblematic images by Juan Gris, Braque or Picasso through their reconversion and physical and photographic manipulation, generating a rebirth in each one of them to become new identities. In them, content and structure seem to knock at the door of the eternal discussion of the limit of plane and volume, of those textures that reveal something more than two-dimensionality, although without cutting sharply with it.

Photocubism follows the cadence of the work and research that gives art history a fundamental starting point for the dialogue that Vik Muniz has been drawing for years and that aims to bring closer the answer to the questions of representation and semiotics that hide behind the consecrated image.

Photocubism can be seen until November 9 at the Galería Elba Benítez, San Lorenzo, 11 (courtyard), Madrid (Spain).
