A REVISIT TO THE WORK OF RAPHAEL HASTINGS AT ICPNA

The exhibition El incondicionado desocultamiento: las experimentaciones audiovisuales de Rafael Hastings (The Unconditioned Unveiling: Rafael Hastings’ Audiovisual Experimentations) has opened at the ICPNA San Miguel space, offering a revisit of the Peruvian visual artist’s filmic work.

A REVISIT TO THE WORK OF RAPHAEL HASTINGS AT ICPNA

The show centers around the film The Unconditioned Unveiling: Four Short Films on the Act of Disappearance (1974), in which Hastings merges elements of pre-Columbian cultures with Eastern traditions. In addition to the screening of this recently recovered film, the exhibition presents a selection of previously unseen works from the 1970s, including his early Super 8 mm experiments and groundbreaking video explorations.

“Hastings’ work is a fundamental testimony within the history of contemporary Peruvian art. His audiovisual work, which has been scarcely studied until now, reveals his interest in the dematerialization of the image and the intersection of cultural temporalities,” says José Carlos Mariátegui, the exhibition’s curator.

With this exhibition, ICPNA reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting national artistic heritage, fostering spaces for dialogue around the contributions of key figures in the cultural scene.

Rafael Hastings (Peru, 1945–2020) was a visual artist with an international career, having studied in Brussels, Leuven, and the Royal College of Art in London. His first solo exhibition in Brussels, at the age of 22, was presented by Jean-Luc Godard and Maurice Béjart. Over his career, he held nearly a hundred exhibitions in cities such as New York, Paris, Berlin, Buenos Aires, and Beijing, where he presented a major retrospective in 1999. His work is part of prestigious collections and museums, including the MoMA in New York and the Museum of Art of Lima. Hastings received numerous awards, such as the Codex Award for Latin American Painting and an honorary doctorate from the University of Trujillo. In 2008, he inaugurated a monumental mosaic mural in Trujillo, considered one of the most important of its kind in the world.

The Unconditioned Unveiling: Rafael Hastings’ Audiovisual Experimentations will be on view until April 26 at ICPNA San Miguel, located at Avenida La Marina 2469, San Miguel (Peru).
