EXPLORING PERU AND ITALY: A JOURNEY THROUGH SHARED HISTORY

Milan hosts an extraordinary exhibition marking the bicentenary of Peru’s independence, the 150th anniversary of Italy-Peru diplomatic ties, and the bicentenary of Antonio Raimondi, a Milanese explorer who greatly contributed to the country. Organized with the Consulate General of Peru, the display at MUDEC’s Agora highlights key moments in its liberation through museum artifacts.

EXPLORING PERU AND ITALY: A JOURNEY THROUGH SHARED HISTORY

The antiques presented at ¡Libertad! L’indipendenza del Perù nelle collezioni del MUDEC(Peruvian Independence in the MUDEC Collections) reveal the resilience of Peru’s indigenous cultures, their adaptation to harsh environments, and their role in forming the Inca Empire. The colonial period brought cultural blending but also resistance, reflected in hidden symbolic motifs in textiles.

Antonio Raimondi, born in Milan in 1826, dedicated his life to studying the South American country´s natural and cultural diversity. On his bicentenary, the exhibition highlights his contributions, showcasing objects he sent to Milan’s Natural History Museum, now part of MUDEC.

Marking 150 years of diplomatic relations, the exhibition includes Candy Carmona’s photographs of Milan’s Peruvian community, Andrea Balossi’s images of the ‘Señor de los Milagros’ celebration, and portraits of notable Peruvians in Italy, such as tenor Luigi Alva and artist Jorge Eielson.

¡Libertad! L’indipendenza del Perù nelle collezioni del MUDEC can be seen until February 23rd, 2025 at MUDEC, Via Tortona 56, Milan (Italy).
