FLOR GARDUÑO AT FOTOFEST´S SPRING SHOWCASE

Divided into six thematic sections—The Path of Yesterday, Ritualities, Construction of the Moment, Constructed Landscapes, Suspended Time, and Body and Magic— Flor Garduño: Paths of Life highlights recurring motifs in Garduño’s work, seamlessly bridging past and present. Through these photographs, Garduño explores transcendent themes of ritual, mythology, legacy, symbolic archetypes, and the connection between humanity and the natural world.

The exhibition presents a range of public programs, including an opening celebration with the artist and a public conversation between Garduño, FotoFest co-founder Wendy Watriss, and FotoFest executive director Steven Evans at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

The show is organized by FotoFest, Houston, in collaboration with the artist’s studio and El Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City. It was originally curated by Ery Camara for El Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Flor Garduño was born in Mexico City in 1957 and studied visual arts at the Old Academy of San Carlos (UNAM), where she was inspired by the work of Hungarian photographer Kati Horna. She perfected her photographic skills working as an assistant in Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s darkroom. Her work, often described as magical realism, spans images of daily life, portraiture, fictional landscapes, and still lives. Garduño has exhibited at esteemed institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago; the Musée de I’Elysée, Switzerland; the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; and FotoFest.

Her photographs are featured in prominent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Her acclaimed series Witnesses of Time, which debuted at the FotoFest Biennial 1992, toured globally.
