EMPTINESS AND PRESENCE AT MARLI MATSUMOTO
Marli Matsumoto Arte Contemporânea announced the exhibition LUA NOVA (New Moon), with a presentation and critical text by Daniela Avellar, which brings together works by Amelia Toledo, Anna Maria Maiolino, Elvis Almeida, Juan Casemiro, Julien Bismuth, Kuenan Tikuna, Leka Mendes, Lygia Pape, Magdalena Jitrik, Natalie Braido, Raphaela Melsohn, Rosário Lopez and Tunga.
LUA NOVA (New Moon) is an unfolding continuation of the gallery's previous show, Caminho do Meio (The Middle Way). Both exhibitions present a cross-generational dialogue among Latin American artists, predominantly featuring works by Brazilians. LUA NOVA (New Moon) draws inspiration from the image of the new moon as the catalyst for its poetic conception, a suggestion that comes from the homonymous title of Leka Mendes' work. During this lunar phase, the moon's visible surface remains unlit by the sun, rendering it imperceptible to the naked eye. This metaphor delves into concepts widely explored in the history of art, such as emptiness and presence. In this exhibition, the absent/present object, seemingly invisible and paradoxical, serves as a conduit for engaging with works that, in their unique ways, evoke a sense of emptiness. This is achieved through the creation of spaces and cracks, the presence of hollow and voided forms, the incorporation of flow and air passages, diverse compositions, and the use of discarded materials, among other possibilities. The overarching theme of the exhibition, albeit in a broad sense, encourages contemplation of certain structures in both art and everyday life. It accomplishes this through the establishment of an imaginative space or the reframing of dual relationships, such as figure and background, full and empty.
