LEILA TSCHOPP: ARTEBA'S NOMINEE FOR THE EFG LATIN AMERICA ART AWARD

Leila Tschopp, represented by HACHE - Galería de arte contemporáneo, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, constitutes painting as a disturbing and desolate territory, at the same time real and fictional, that provides impossible coordinates for human life. There they are, nevertheless, placed, the humans, in scenes - true dramaturgies - of maximum tension, under a rising blinding sun that makes it impossible to grasp the place or the time of the facts. “Fleeing in the darkness, in broad daylight”, the artist will refer. Clandestine detention center? Domestic space? Police station? For decades Leila Tschopp has been exploring the possibilities of abstraction to stress the viewer's surrounding space from the realm of painting. In Pintura inhumana (2024), her most recent series, the space becomes liminal, critical, crossed by humans whose vital condition is unknown, placed rehearsing the possibility of an uncertain future. There, the tense space drowns out the woman's scream, absorbs it, manifests it. Pintura inhumana is Leila Tschopp's latest series, created for her exhibition at ArtHaus, Buenos Aires, curated by theater director Mariana Obersztern.

The work was selected at arteba with the collaboration of Victoria Noorthoorn, director of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (MAMBA), together with Celia Sredni de Birbragher, director and Editor of ArtNexus.

The EFG Latin America Art Award celebrates its fourteenth edition to continue its commitment to support the production of Latin American artists. Through a jury at contemporary art fairs in Latin America, the works of various artists from the region are pre-selected throughout the year. The award aims to promote the continent's visual arts production and fairs among collectors around the world, with the strategic development of Liaisons.

This year, the fairs where the works will be preselected are: SP Arte, São Paulo; Pinta PArC, Lima; arteba, Buenos Aires; Ch.ACO, Santiago de Chile and ArtBo, Bogota.

As in previous years, once the nominees have been selected at the participating Latin American art fairs, the acquisition will be announced at Pinta Miami during the week of Art Basel. EFG Capital will acquire the winning artist's representative artwork, which will become part of the complete EFG Latin America Art Award collection, on permanent display at the Miami offices.
