REALITY AND REPRESENTATION: JAVIER PELÁEZ IN LIMA
ENLACE gallery presents the new solo exhibition of Mexican artist Javier Peláez, which condenses five years of his work. An artistic proposal that challenges traditional perceptions of painting and invites us to reflect on reality and representation.
Javier Pelaez's first exhibition in Lima, Peru will be held at the ENLACE gallery. Spectra (lo que cubre el manto) [what covers the veil] synthesizes the last years of Pelaez's artistic practice, with works made in painting and drawing.
Recognized for his constant pictorial exploration, Javier Peláez uses painting to understand and inhabit the world. He enriches his field of action by moving through the most formal aesthetics of art history, while incorporating the influences of the contemporary digital context. This synergy is particularly reflected in the series of pieces of different formats that make up this unprecedented exhibition.
"Through techniques and strategies such as hyperrealism, gesture, glitch, fragmentation, geometric modulation and sfumato, Peláez creates a work that is not based on representing an image, but on exposing what is not in sight... The expression ‘what covers the veil’ acts as a trompe l'oeil: although it presents an image of a cloth enveloping a sacred object, its true purpose is to remind us that the focus is not on what is hidden, but on the veil that, when unraveled, reveals the artifice,” explains Christian Barragán, curator of the exhibition and collaborator of the artist for the past ten years.
In Spectra (lo que cubre el manto), the artist invites the viewer to reflect on perception, identity and the intersection between the obvious and the subtle, questioning the formalities and limits traditionally associated with pictorial practice.
