FUERA DE FOCO – TEN YEARS OF EMERGENT PHOTOGRAPHY

As part of the 20th anniversary of BAphoto, the art fair dedicated exclusively to photography in Buenos Aires, the Fuera de Foco section celebrates its tenth edition in 2024. Since its creation, this section has been a key space to promote the visibility of emerging galleries and artists, functioning as a platform that connects Argentine photography with the international scene. Throughout these ten years, Fuera de Foco has played a fundamental role in positioning emerging galleries and generating links with larger art circuits, contributing to BAphoto and Pinta's goal of promoting Latin American art in the world.

FUERA DE FOCO – TEN YEARS OF EMERGENT PHOTOGRAPHY

The 2024 edition, to be held from October 27 to 29 at La Rural, Buenos Aires, expands its exhibition area and the number of invited spaces. With the notion of “confluence” as the curatorial axis, this edition will bring together both historical projects that have been part of the fair and new spaces that contribute freshness and dynamism. Among the participating galleries are Consultorio (San Miguel de Tucumán), Crudo (Rosario) and The White Lodge (Córdoba), among others, which ensures a heterogeneity of visual proposals that explore diverse possibilities of the photographic medium.

Since its conception, Fuera de Foco has functioned as a space for exploration. In each edition, the section has challenged the traditional limits of photography, approaching it as an experimental record of the world, as a way to explore the relationship between memory and archive, or an approach to social reality. The 2024 edition will be no exception, as it seeks to continue consolidating these approaches from new perspectives, expanding the boundaries of what is understood as contemporary photography.

One of the highlights of this edition will be the In Situ Award, which continues to support national productions with economic recognition for the winners. In collaboration with Pinta BAphoto, this award provides a grant to an emerging gallery or collective project, which will participate free of charge in Fuera de Foco, ensuring inclusion and support to spaces that are beginning to consolidate in the local scene.

Over the years, Fuera de Foco, the sector dedicated to young projects and up-and-coming galleries, has allowed new photographic voices and proposals to find their place within the artistic panorama. The selected artists not only work from a photographic perspective, but also produce situations that cross disciplines, exploring the boundaries between photography, plastic art and sculpture. This hybrid approach has been a constant to enhance the crossovers between the traditional and the experimental.

Fuera de Foco has also been a space for dialogue between generations of artists and the encounter between different audiences. Since its first edition, it has promoted an exchange of experiences and searches between emerging and more established artists, strengthening intergenerational ties. This has allowed BAphoto's audience, both local and international, to discover new voices and perspectives in Argentine photography, and artists have found in the fair a platform to project themselves to other markets and audiences.

This sector of the fair has not only allowed young artists and gallerists to experiment with new visual proposals, but has also facilitated their integration into a broader circuit, allowing contemporary Argentine and Latin American photography to continue to evolve and dialogue with global trends.

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, Fuera de Foco not only celebrates its past achievements, but also looks to the future. Its ability to adapt to changes and continue proposing innovative projects positions it as one of the most dynamic sections of BAphoto. By expanding its surface and the number of participants in this edition, Fuera de Foco reinforces its commitment to continue being a gateway for emerging galleries, maintaining its spirit of experimentation and openness to new ways of doing and thinking about photography.
