IMAGES THAT REMAIN FOR WHAT WAS SAID – OSVALDO SALERNO IN ARTÍSTICA
Artística - Espacio de arte presents from August 5 the artist Osvaldo Salerno with the exhibition of photographs El retorno (The Return), within Pinta Sud | ASU art week. It is curated by Javier Medina Verdolini and has additional texts by Ticio Escobar.

"During the long Stroessner dictatorship, the citizenry, protected by nocturnal darkness, tagged certain walls of Asuncion with denunciations, condemnations and democratic demands that, later, would be covered with new strokes by the police during the first rounds of the morning. The erasures made the dissident texts illegible, but, perhaps driven by the force of their reasons, they managed to peek through the stains of censorship and make their way through the mesh of scratches and erasures. In this way, they managed to reinscribe new messages. The artist displaced these small photographs and negatives to a new visual and exhibition context.
A displacement that promoted the construction of a new theoretical framework oriented to define the character of the current work," writes Ticio Escobar.
This work is the example that sometimes photography transcends the intention of its creator and triggers new and powerful readings; it is a proof of the forcefulness of the medium that works mimetically with the truth, to recall a complex past, as the curator of the exhibition proposes.
"The images are worth for what was said and what was censored on the walls, two acts that combine to leave a record of that hard time. Not in vain, these simple snapshots, without any pretension of constituting a project or a work, were rediscovered by collectors who knew how to understand in the photos their historical value, of the document that these writings unveiled where the messages of political affronts were forbidden, becoming a weapon against silence," explains curator Javier Medina Verdolini.
