Notes related to Venezuela

Isabella Despujols (Barquisemeto, Venezuela, 1994), Venezuelan artist based in Brazil, uses her artistic references for the realization of her latest series of works, a set made this year where textiles and embroidery are especially relevant, as well as the formal fact that they reflect. In them is palpable the conversation that he intends to maintain with those styles and languages that were fundamental in the countries to which he circumscribes his personal experience.

Sol Calero (Caracas, Venezuela, 1982) uses the guanabana, a fruit endemic to Central America and the Caribbean, to symbolically instrumentalize the creation of a representation of the feelings of belonging, home, everyday life and stereotypes through the wide conquest of the spaces of the Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, transformed for the occasion into visual and popular references of a well-known and recognized Latin America.

Rutas relacionales (Relational Routes) is the long-term collective with which the Lucía Mendoza gallery celebrates its tenth anniversary and with which it intends to raise awareness, through the work of about 40 artists, about several of the current thematic and philosophical axes, those that trace their need from the relationship of mankind with its environment. In these axes, we find lines of argument that deal with ecology, society and economies, passing through everything that composes them, such as political processes or the construction of identity. 

In April 2022, my family suggested we attend the opening of an exhibition by Marisol Escobar, a French-Venezuelan artist whose name was vaguely familiar to me. I wasn’t particularly excited, but wanting to spend time with them, I agreed to go. Little did I know that this visit would leave an incredible mark on me.

Marisol: a retrospective is an itinerant exhibition on view at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, featuring the collection of artworks Marisol kept in her personal possession and left to the museum.

If the history of art is, to a certain extent, "the history of the complex infrastructure generated by the development of relations between artists and economic power" (López Zumelzu, 2020), when we are faced with works that subvert the canons established by tradition -and still belong to it- we may ask ourselves, how can we operate from within this framework to question the policies that constitute and decide what is made visible, and what is consequently made invisible?

Born in Venezuela, Antonio Briceño is a photographer and biologist. His series Dioses de América. Panteón natural (Gods of America. Natural Pantheon) participates in the Special Project Amazonia of Pinta Miami 2023. He has been working for more than 20 years on this series, whose purpose is to make visible the indigenous mythologies that have survived Christianity and colonialism, but are still in danger of extinction.

The Museo de Arte Moderno de México (MAM) presents the exhibition Oswaldo Vigas: Looking Inward, which explores, 100 years after the birth of the visual artist, fundamental works of his prolific career, as well as his intellectual interests. The work of Oswaldo Vigas will dialogue with other Venezuelan, Latin American and European creators of the time.

From September 13 to November 15, 2023, Venezuelan artist Pedro Medina inaugurated his first solo show in Spain, with Cerquone Gallery, at its headquarters in Madrid. Entitled Gran Turismo: Simulaciones Simultáneas (Big Tourism: Simultaneous Simulations), the exhibition is conceived as an exhibition of recent work on a process of observation of speed and resistance in painting.

On the artist's centenary, the Ascaso Art Gallery of Caracas will present, together with the Otero-Pardo Foundation, an exhibition entitled “Contemplaciones y Memorias” (Contemplations and Memories), which under the curatorship of Bélgica Rodríguez and the museography of Rafael Santana, brings together a selection of paintings and serigraphs made by the outstanding creator.

It is an individual exhibition by the Venezuelan artist Juan Carlos Portillo made up of a set of 23 works that unfold in the room as a journey towards memory, where the flight of birds and a translucent atmosphere on the canvas trace a network that introduces the viewer in an anachronic album, the artist's personal blog, according to the gallery representatives.

The works presented make use of and reference to the image as a channel, as a concept, as a medium. Migrating from one ontological level to another, Candeo highlights the way in which the contemporary world is built from immediate registers, multiple narratives, and memory models.
