CHILE AT THE VENICE BIENNALE – “TURBA TOL” BY CAMILA MARAMBIO
The Chilean pavilion that will represent Chile at the upcoming 59th Venice Art Biennale will host the collective and interdisciplinary project Turba Tol, curated by Camila Marambio and with the participation of Ariel Bustamante, sound artist, Dominga Sotomayor, filmmaker, Carla Macchiavello, art historian and Alfredo Thiermann, architect. The management is in charge of Juan Pablo Vergara and also includes scientists, indigenous activists and other collaborators from the creative field.
rīvus - 23RD BIENNALE OF SYDNEY
From March 12th to June 13th 2022, the Biennale of Sydney will present over 330 artworks by 89 participants and 400 events. The Biennale, titled rīvus, meaning “stream” in Latin, will feature new work and commissions responding to water ecology and relationships with the natural world.
PERU AT THE VENICE BIENNALE – “PEACE IS A CORROSIVE PROMISE” BY HERBERT RODRÍGUEZ
Herbert Rodríguez (Lima, 1959), artist from Herlitzka + Faria, will participate in the 59 International Art Exhibition in the Venice Biennale: The Milk of Dreams. The exhibition at the Peruvian pavilion La paz es una promesa corrosiva (Peace is a corrosive promise) gathers 30 works and a projection of handcrafted slides. Among the works, there will be pieces of agit-prop (a mixture of photomontage, collage, stencil, silkscreen, and painting) and his mural newspapers Arte – Vida (Art – Life) made in 1989.
MÓNICA HELLER FOR THE ARGENTINE PAVILION AT THE 2022 VENICE BIENNIAL
Heller's proposal has been selected from more than 30 preliminary projects presented in an open call through the Argentine Foreign Ministry and consists of a multi-channel 3D animation video installation. The curator of the exhibition is Alejo Ponce de León.
GERARDO GOLDWASSER: REPRESENTING URUGUAY AT THE VENICE BIENNALE
Goldwasser (Montevideo, 1961) will be representing Uruguay in the 59th Venice Biennale 2022 with his project Persona. Curated by Laura Malosetti Costa and Pablo Uribe, Persona disputes uniformity and disputes the idea itself of persona. Goldwasser's project was chosen by the National Visual Arts Commission in an open competition declared by the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture. The Uruguay pavilion occupies a privileged spot in the Gardens of the Biennale, flanked by those of France and the United States.
LESLEY LOKKO APPOINTED CURATOR OF THE VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE 2023
The Board of the Venice Biennale, upon the recommendation of President Roberto Cicutto, appointed Lesley Lokko as Director of the Architecture Sector, with the specific task of curating the 18th International Architecture Exhibition to be held in 2023. The Exhibition will be held from Saturday, May 20 to Sunday, November 26, 2023.
SILENT RISINGS - 34th BIENNIAL OF SÃO PAULO, JURACI DÓREA AND GIORGIO MORANDI
One of the key works of the 34th São Paulo Biennial literally anchors the robust and uncomfortable presence between the interstitial areas of this modernist building, so questioned today. However, its meanings go beyond the perimeters of the construction and extend to, for example, some of the civic sculptures that populate public places throughout Brazil and that are also located in the surroundings.
BIENALSUR: AT THE REINA SOFIA, CUBAN ARTIST BELKIS AYON HAS HER FIRST RETROSPECTIVE IN EUROPE
Colografias, the first European retrospective in honor of the Cuban engraver Belkis Ayón (Havana, 1967-1999) was inaugurated on November 16th at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid. The exhibition, which brings together around 80 works produced between 1986 and 1999, constitutes Km 10048 of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South (BIENALSUR), since it is a part, as an associated exhibition, of the biennial held in 124 venues around the world.
CHAOS AND REALITY: LUIS FELIPE NOÉ’S “ENTREVEROS” IN BIENALSUR
The renowned Argentine artist Luis Felipe “Yuyo” Noé is also a part of BIENALSUR 2021, the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South, which emerged at Argentina’s Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero and is held in 124 venues in 24 countries around the world. The installation "Entreveros BIENALSUR / MUNTREF" can be visited in Buenos Aires, at the MUNTREF Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (at its Hotel de Inmigrantes venue), until the end of December.
IN BUENOS AIRES, BIENALSUR INAUGURATES EXHIBITIONS CENTERED ON ABORIGINAL CULTURE
Two new exhibitions were presented last week in the framework of BIENALSUR, the international biennial of contemporary art that is held simultaneously in 124 venues in 50 cities around the world. In this case, the expo’s are held at the Enrique Udaondo Provincial Museum Complex in Luján (Province of Buenos Aires), and are dedicated to the native peoples of the American continent.
WITH A POETIC AND INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION, BIENALSUR LANDS IN SAUDI ARABIA FOR THE SECOND TIME
The Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo del Sur (International Contemporary Art Biennial from the South, in English), better known as BIENALSUR 2021 and born in the Tres de Febrero National University, in Argentina, arrived for the second time in faraway Saudi Arabia with “Echoes. A world between the analogic and the virtual”, a collective exhibition. The show will feature 20 artists from Asia, Africa, America and Europe.
7TH ATHENS BIENNALE “ECLIPSE” AND THE UNSPOKEN PRESENT
Designed to reflect the various aspects of the current transitional experience, the 7th Athens Biennale ECLIPSE aspires to address the viewers’ imagination of potential parallel worlds and futures. ECLIPSE activates a cross-cultural conversation among artistic voices that have historically been pushed to the periphery and orchestrates an experiential shift in art viewing.
BIENALSUR INTERVENES THE GERMAN EMBASSY IN BUENOS AIRES
The work of Carola Zech, Argentinian artist of German descent, arrived, starting September 25th, at the German Embassy in Buenos Aires. A site-specific intervention, “Al azar del viento” (At the wind’s random will) is curated by Diana Weschler, also of German descent, and can be visited until November 28th as part of BIENALSUR 2021’s expositions.

BIENALSUR INAUGURATES “A TURN WITH NO SCREW: URBAN IMAGINATIONS” AT THE BENITO QUINQUELA MARTÍN MUSEUM
The exhibition places the matter of "ways of living" in the La Boca area, linking works that reproduce utopias and failures of modernity. Curated by Diana Wechsler, Benedetta Casini and Leandro Martínez Depietri, this new exhibition in Buenos Aires brings together the works of artists from the BIENALSUR Open Call and historical and contemporary artists that make up the collections of the Emilio Pettoruti Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, of the Banco Ciudad, the Benito Quinquela Martín Museum and the IIAC-UNTREF Archive.
KIMSOOJA AND BIENALSUR: THE NOMAD EXPERIENCE OF THREE EXHIBITIONS
The acclaimed Korean artist Kimsooja will inaugurate on Wednesday September 22nd the last part of her trilogy of simultaneous exhibitions through which she landed in Buenos Aires. Chapter 3: Kimsooja. An inner experience arrives at the Korean Cultural Center in the Argentine capital as a part of Bienalsur 2021, the biennial that emerged at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero and that now takes place simultaneously in more than 124 venues, 23 countries and 50 cities around the world, with the participation of about 400 artists.
FROM SAUDI ARABIA TO BUENOS AIRES: MUHANNAD SHONO IN BIENALSUR
The Saudi artist presents his work for the first time in Argentina in the framework of BIENALSUR 2021. Under the curatorial axis Politics of art, his solo exhibition “Silence still inhabits us” opened at the MUNTREF Sede Hotel de Inmigrantes. Its curator, Diana Wechsler, states that this exhibition reflects on the memory of culture and language, and surprises with a strongly poetic installation about words. Muhannad Shono's production includes intimate drawings, large-scale sculptures, and robotic and technological pieces, with a personal style characterized by versatility and disinhibition.
THE 34TH BIENAL DE SÃO PAULO INAUGURATES “THOUGH IT’S DARK, STILL I SING”
One of the main art events in Latin America, after a one-year postponement due to the pandemic, opens its main exhibition Faz escuro mas eu canto [Though it’s dark, still I sing] with more than one thousand works by 91 artists. Curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti (chief curator), Paulo Miyada (adjunct curator), and Carla Zaccagnini, Francesco Stocchi and Ruth Estévez (guest curators).
“VANISHING POINT” – BIENALSUR’S EXHIBITION EXPLORES MIGRATORY ISSUES
BIENALSUR, the contemporary art international biennial that was crafted in the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, in Argentina, has recently disembarked with “Punto de Fuga” (Vanishing Point), a collective exhibition set in another university, the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, on Thursday, September 9th. The display features artists from countries as diverse as Argentina, Germany, Ecuador, Iran and Switzerland, and is set in the university’s Art Center.
CONTEMPORANEITY OR FICTION? BIENALSUR INAUGURATES “LITERATURE OF THE SELF”
It’ll be the third time that BIENALSUR comes to the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires, in the imposing Pereda Palace. Starting September 8th, Paula Parisot, the Rio-born artist, will be presenting her exhibition Literatura del yo (“Literature of the self”), curated by Argentinian María José Herrera.
BIENALSUR CONTINUES TO BREAK DOWN BORDERS AND ACTIVATE A NEW ORDER
BIENALSUR 2021 arrives at the Francis Naranjo Foundation, in the Canary Islands, Spain with A New Order. Breaking Down Borders, an exhibition curated by Diana Wechsler, artistic director of the contemporary art biennial that celebrates its third edition in more than 23 countries, 50 cities and 124 venues in five continents. The exhibition, which can be seen until the end of September, is part of the curatorial axes Política del arte / Constelaciones fluididas (Art Politics / Fluid Constellations), in line with the exhibition Al Sur del Sur, which is on display in Malaga and Juntos Aparte, at the National Museum of Colombia in Bogota.
COMMONER FANTASIES - BIENALSUR IN THE MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ART OF BUENOS AIRES
The Museum will be the first institution in the Argentine capital to inaugurate an exhibition within BIENALSUR 2021 on August 27. The artists Luciana Lamothe (Argentina), Gabriel Baggio (Argentina), Emil Finnerud (Norway) and Mehryl Levisse (France) exhibit under the curatorship of Leandro Martínez Depietri. The exhibition, on the curatorial axis Politics of art, will be open until October 24.
